Chew Valley Squash Club held its Finals Night last week.
There was some fantastic squash played and great camaraderie but the events were also tinged with sadness.

CVSC’s Finals Night is the culmination of months of knock-out matches for the Club’s Annual Tournaments.

The first match of the night was the Gadsden Handicap Final between Ricky Paredes and Tom Miller. This was a match that was difficult to predict. Ricky played in two of the three finals in 2017, and he was last year’s runner up in the Gadsden as well as winning the Boucher Plate and the Butcombe Race of Champions Series 2 Plate. Tom, however, was a Finals Night virgin, being new to the Club. Their handicaps were -16 and -7 so Ricky would have to be on his toes! The match was a thrilling opening to Finals Night. Tom Miller was the victor 2-0 with game scores of 31-29, 31-29... it just could not have been closer and both players were on their knees at the end. Well done Tom.

Next up was the Boucher Plate Final between Paul Pearson and Jamie Watson. Jamie was last year’s runner up in the very same competition and was looking to go one better this year; Paul, however, was the second Finals Night virgin. Another difficult one to call. Another tremendous battle and although Jamie won 3-0 (9-2, 9-0, 9-4) the score line does not reflect the quality of the squash and the rallies. Well done Jamie.

The culmination of the evening was the Boucher Cup Final; the battle to be the Club’s No.1 for 2018. The match was between Joey Williams and John Thompson; youth versus experience. Joey’s been a winner at the Club from an early age: he won the Toman Junior Cup twice in both 2008 and ‘09. He also won Series 2 of the Butcombe Race of Champions in 2017, and was runner up for Series 1 in 2017 and again for Series 3 in early 2018. John is an old hand at finals: his winning ways started back in 1991 as a Gadsden Handicap champion. John has won the Boucher Cup every year (with one exception in 2012) from 2010 to 2017 and was looking to make it eight wins in the last nine years. The audience were treated to a first class display of squash. John came out the victor 3-0 (9-6, 9-4, 9-2) but the score line again does reflect the closeness of the match and the sheer speed and length of the rallies. Joey through everything at John but the more experienced John just soaked it up until he had an opportunity to kill the point. Well done John.

A great evening of squash. After the finals the players, officials and audience convened in The Pelly in Chew Magna to celebrate a successful evening but more importantly to raise a glass and pay tribute to Simon Chubb who sadly passed away last month. Chubby had been a member of the Club since 1985 and the Club No.1 for many years. The League Cup will be renamed the Chubby League Cup in his honour; he won the League Cup on 15 occasions as well as having his name on the Club’s Wall of Fame no fewer than 21 times.
