Update on ES membership tracking for league players

From the Avon and Bristol & District committee.

We’re heading towards the tail end of the Autumn leagues and so have had plenty of time to sort out membership with England Squash.

If you remember we sent out a news item just before the start of the leagues explaining that in order to play in the Avon and Bristol & District leagues, players needed to be members of England Squash. Please refer to the news article here as it explains the reasoning behind that decision.

In that news article, we talked about tracking players but we have not done anything about that so far. This message is to explain how we’re going to track players and what will happen if they are not members.

    • We have agreed that you are deemed a league player if you play three or more matches in any one league. This allows for occasional players and times when the team is short but three or more has to be a considered a ‘league player’.
    • Most league players will have joined ES via their club and the club will have entered their name into the ES website which should then have returned their membership number. So, please ask your club for your number. Some players have joined as individual members and they did that directly on the ES website which would have given them their numbers straight away.
    • Every league player needs to record their ES membership number on the badsquash system. This can be done by the players themselves if they are registered (bottom left of home page) or by their club admins (the same people who enter the results each week).
    • To enter the membership number, go to the player’s history page, click on ‘Edit’ (near the top) and enter it in the ES membership field. Please enter the full number and click on ‘Save’. That’s it. Only the players themselves or club admins can do this – and it’s only those people who can see your number.
    • Once the number has been entered, the system will return you to the player history page and you should see the number you entered underneath your name along with a validity check which is done automatically via the ES membership system.
      • V – Valid
      • I – invalid number
      • X - Expired
    • Hopefully all will be well and you’ll see that your number is valid. If not, you may need to go back to your club to check. No problems at this point – it’s just a check.
    • The system will check that each player has a valid membership number when it runs the other rules checks every night – the ones that generate the penalties.
    • If a player has played three or more matches in a league but is not a valid member, then the team will lose any points gained by that player and be penalised a further 3 points. There won’t be any compensation for the other team. We will limit this to a total of 2 players per team. You won’t end up with minus points.

These rules will be turned on for the next league after Christmas but please start entering your numbers now so you can check they’re valid and sort out any problems ahead of time.

There will also be an optional column in the rankings lists for admins to quickly see who’s got membership numbers and who hasn’t so it should be possible to avoid slip-ups. If you are an admin you will see an 'ES number' check box at the top of the rankings you can use.

Remember the whole point of this is:

    • Support England Squash in their effects to promote squash across the county to increase the numbers playing and reduce the number of courts closing.
    • Support Avon Squash. If ES know how many players and clubs we have, all actively contributing to the greater good we’ll naturally get more support.
    • Support Avon Squash through rebates. Some of the money that goes to ES from the clubs and players comes back to Avon County so we can put on tournaments, training, marking courses, support of juniors etc. Unfortunately, some of the clubs have been late to join this year and our rebate is significantly lower than it should be. That’s a shame - and unfair on all those who paid in good time.

Any questions please get back to any of the committee or just reply to this email.
