Summer league ranking change - update

You may remember that I posted a note to explain that the ranking system now allows for the much better players to not have to pummel their opponent in order to keep their ranking. It's been like that for a long time but I recently lowered the difference at which it kicked in so it was invoked more often.

It turns out that one of the side effects of that was that if the better player went ahead and still pummelled their opponent, it was comparing with a reduced effort result and was bumping their level up unfairly and, worse still, docking the level of their pummelled opponent too.

This is now fixed by implementing a range of levels that the better player could be playing at from 'kindly' through to 'nasty' and any result that falls inside that range has no impact on either player. In order for the better player to go up they'll have to play better than their top level but they won't go down unless they play worse than 'kindly'. It's the other way around for their opponent.

So, a lot of these mis-matched matches are going to have no impact on the ranking system now which is probably the best thing at the end of the day. Unless you play outside of the range, that is. Note that this now applies to all matches; past, present and future as the level calculations are re-done for every match, every night.

If you've got this far then you're probably interested enough to know that I've also added a new page that explains where those magical +/- level percentages come from. Just click on the percentage (or the 'i' icon when I add that) and you'll see the page.

    Feedback welcome as ever.
